Not a principle, more the result of counting. What I found when I pulled every piece of cloth in the house onto the bed, what secondhand has actually been worth, and the one thing I genuinely miss about buying new.

I ran a cheap set and an expensive set on the same bed for a year and paid attention. Where the cheap one lost, where it quietly won, and the costly thing I regret buying most.

A worn sheet is not rubbish and it is not a keepsake either. What I do with linen once it has gone through at the corners, which second lives have been worth the scissors, and which ones I quietly abandoned.

I gave away my iron three years ago and the house got quieter and better looking. What creases in linen actually are, why morning light makes the argument better than I can, and the one thing I still press.

Everyone tells you linen gets softer. Nobody tells you how long the waiting takes, or what the middle of that year feels like at three in the morning. Here is what my first set actually did over twelve months of ordinary use.
